Our History
Bodegas Navajas S.L. is a family winery situated in the village of Navarrete, in the heart of the D.O.C. Rioja.
Founded in 1918 as Bodegas Arjona, the Navajas family acquired a share in the business in 1978, and in 1983 they become the sole stockholders, changing its name to Bodegas Navajas.
The bodega is currently run by Antonio Navajas and his wife Rosa Maria Gandarias. Their son Roberto is responsible for production and quality control, and their daughter Mercedes is in charge of exports.
Antonio Navajas, current managing-director, took over the family business and geared it exclusively towards bottled wine, which he promoted both nationally and internationally; a decision which has favoured a considerable growth in our prestige in different markets.
Our Winery
2000 was a turning point in the Bodega’s history. We invested in enlarging our storage facilities, including doubling our barrel ageing area and our winemaking capacity.
In 2005, this plan for improving and developing our facilities continued. A new barrel- ageing area and the “social building” were built – the latter housing the offices, visitor reception area, shop and tasting room.
The result of our investments is that we have modern facilities equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the treatment and care of our wines.
Our Vineyards
Our wine production begins in the vineyard itself. Depending on its situation and soil type, each plot and each grape variety is carefully looked after with a view to the wine that will finally be obtained.
At Bodegas Navajas we are convinced that quality begins in the vineyard, and for this reason we exhaustively monitor and control the 150Ha. of vineyards belonging to our growers in Rioja Alta and Baja.
Both areas are characterized by exceptional quality soil and low yielding vineyards, thereby providing top quality grapes.
At harvest time, when alcohol content, colour and acidity have attained their most favourable levels, the fruit is hand-picked and brought to the bodega that day.
Particular care is taken to avoid excess weight on the grapes, since this could lead to early crushing and fermentation prior to their arrival at the bodega.
